This palace was built in 1250 AD as a residence for a Damascene family, in an architectural style inspired by the Aramean, Roman, Phoenician, and Arab civilizations—creating a charming cultural fusion. Later, it was purchased by an Austrian physician who restored it after it was damaged by the 1860 earthquake. He made it his residence and the headquarters of the Austrian Honorary Consulate, a role it maintained until 2006.
